What Modal Really Is — and How to Care For It
Tous Nouvelles

Every Basma scarf is 100% modal. It's the single decision that shapes how the scarf feels on your head, how it drapes, and how long it lasts—so it's worth understanding what you're actually wearing.

What is modal actually?

Modal is a semi-synthetic fibre spun from cellulose, most often from beech pulp. It sits in the rayon family, but it's made differently: the fibres are stretched further during spinning, making them finer and considerably stronger when wet than ordinary viscose. That single difference is why modal survives washing in a way that cheaper rayon doesn't.

In practice, that gives you a fabric that is breathable in heat, absorbent rather than clammy, resistant to pilling, and heavy enough to fall properly instead of sliding off the way satin and chiffon do.

Why it suits hijabs specifically

Three things matter in a hijab:

It has to breathe. Modal moves moisture away from your skin instead of trapping it, which is what makes it wearable through long summer days.

It has to stay put. Slippery fabrics need constant adjusting. Modal has enough grip and enough weight to hold a wrap without a handful of pins.

It has to be opaque. A scarf that does not offer coverage is not doing its job. Our modal is woven densely enough to give full coverage on its own. We always recommend styling with an undercap for grip and a clean look, although that is not necessary.

How to wash it

Modal is not fragile, but it is heat-sensitive. Almost every ruined modal scarf was ruined by a dryer.

  1. Cold water, always. Hand wash, or use a delicate machine cycle with the scarf inside a mesh laundry bag so it can't twist around other items.
  2. Mild detergent, no bleach. Bleach breaks down cellulose fibres and will dull the colour permanently.
  3. Skip the fabric softener. Modal is already soft. Softener coats the fibres and reduces exactly the breathability you paid for.
  4. Air dry, flat or hanging, away from direct heat. No tumble dryer, no radiator, no direct sun. Heat is what shrinks modal—not water.

If it needs pressing, use a cool iron or a steamer. Most of the time, a scarf that has been hung overnight will drop its creases on its own.

Storing it

Hang it or roll it loosely. Hard folds left for months eventually set into lines that require steaming to remove.

The short version

Cold water, mild detergent, no softener, no wringing, no dryer. Do that and a modal hijab holds its colour and its drape for years.
